Blossom on Monton Green

Blossom in Japan

The garden gang of Monton Green think you will agree that the Green has looked particularly good this spring.

All of the beds (eight) and both roundabouts are tended by a handful of volunteers who give up a few hours a week – usually on Sunday morning – to plant and dig; tidy and deadhead; edge and weed and stand back to admire.

We get a great deal of satisfaction from creating the display which now has all year round colours. No financial help is given to us from the council but they do mow the grass and liaison has been better recently.

This year two of the group went to Japan at cherry blossom time and we enclose some photos for comparison. In Japan the people have picnics under the blossom trees and think it is good luck to be showered with sakara petals when the wind blows. They have a calendar of viewing times and even have floodlit avenues for night time viewing.

Our display on the Green was more blousy than Japanese trees because they prune everything carefully every year – maybe Salford could take a tip from that!
